_CUNIT
Introduction
Cunit is placed in a privileged spot of the Catalan
area, in Costa Daurada, at 54 km from Barcelona. The village
gives the visitor a wide cultural, sportive, ludic and festive offer
which makes Cunit a special attractive village during the whole year.
The beauty and the services of its beaches, golden and vast, have
been rewarded by the EEC with the blue flag for their quality. They
have available showers, fountains, information about the weather
and sea, bay watchmen and lifeguards, WC, newsstands, and so on,
to help visitors comfort. And there is a long promenade to enjoy
the pleasure of walking near the sea.
From the village equipments, we point up the Town Hall building
where there is the library, the cultural centre and the gymnasium;
and also the municipal sports complex where you can find tennis courts,
swimming pools, etc.
It's an ideal place to rest for those who seek tourism far from
noisy masses. Here they'll find an enchanting place with traditions,
history, entertainment and, above all, an exceptional weather near
the sea.
History and Interesting Places
Cunit has its origins in the prehistoric period. There
have been discovered some townships dated from 3700 BC. The last
site discovered is an Iberian village called Fondo d'en Roig placed
in the Iberian Cross-street parallel to the highway.
The most characteristic landmark of Cunit is the 12 th century
Romanic Church of Saint Christopher.
As for the local traditions, it stands out the old lost custom
of the "salpàs". It consisted in the blessing of all
the houses and farms. The priest, with two acolytes, blessed the
houses with water and salt. The salt was embedded in the lintel of
the main door and near the fire. He also blessed the yard and the
stall. This blessing was done by Easter and it also took place in
other parts of Catalonia. Its aim was to protect houses, people
and animals from witches and evil spirits, and from spells and lightning.
The priest and the acolytes were rewarded with eggs and other products
form the earth and the sea.
Gastronomy and Festivities
The cooking offer is very varied in Cunit. Its dishes
are good example of the Mediterranean cuisine. You can find sea and
mountain products: dried and weak rice, fish cooked in casserole,
"calçots", grilled meat, roasted greens and, of course, "xató".
The "xató" is a sea and mountain dish,
as its ingredients: fish (anchovy, cod and tuna) and country products
(endive, olives, "nyores").
The olive oil is the base of the sauce, it mixes all with its Mediterranean
flavour.
Cunit keeps up a merry and participant spirit during the whole
year. Its most important holidays are the Main Festival, celebrated
on the second week of July, and Carnival, with spectacular parades
of floats and groups. |
