_SEGUR DE CALAFELL
History
Segur de Calafell is a coastal district of Calafell,
which has spectacularly grown up in last years.
The name of Segur comes from the Latin adjective securum,
probably due to the existence of an old defensive fortification,
from which the cylindrical tower detached to the Casa Vella may have
made up. This tower still stood until the knocking down of the Casa
Vella in 1972.
At present, Segur de Calafell is an area of detached and semi-detached
houses in the hill side and apartments in the coast. It has a marina
which it's being totally renovated and enlarged.
The project also includes sporting courts, a public square, a great
number of shadow spots, small buildings for municipal services
and equipments; and a playground for children. It will fully work
in the summer of 2005.
Interesting places
SANT MIQUEL HERMITAGE, 12 th century.
This small building is placed in a low promontory of Segur de Calafell, where, up to
a few years, we could still contemplate a great fortified house of
late gothic style. This hermitage, small jewel of the transitional
architecture from Romanic to gothic, is a rectangular lonely nave
and floor. The altar stone of the major altar is preserved.
The first written knowledge about the Sant Miquel church is dated
from 1238. Practically, it hasn't been altered, so its state of preservation
allows us to appreciate a curious medieval construction in its original
condition. |
